Questions & Answers

Here you'll find a selection of frequently asked questions and answers for a quick overview.

Before soldering, the surfaces to be joined should be thoroughly cleaned of oxides, dirt, and grease—for example, with a wire brush. Next, a suitable flux is applied. This prevents oxidation during heating and helps ensure that the solder evenly coats the joint.

Emil Otto’s ready-to-use soldering and tinning paste, ZINNIN GREEN I Sn100, is suitable for soft soldering copper tubes and brass fittings. It consists of 100 percent pure tin and is lead-free and zinc-free. In addition to copper and brass alloys, it can also be used for soft soldering and tinning steel and stainless steel.

A suitable flux must ensure good soldering properties without interfering with the wave or selective soldering process. At the same time, it must be possible to process it reliably within the defined process parameters. For nickel surfaces, protection against re-oxidation is also required.

The flux must remain sufficiently active throughout the required temperature range of the soldering process. This is particularly important at higher solder bath temperatures and in processes where wire strand coatings are thermally removed during soldering.

Cleaning solar panels is important because contaminants such as pollen, dust, or bird droppings can reduce the light transmittance of the panel surface. This reduces the power output of the photovoltaic system. Specialized cleaners are often used for gentle cleaning, such as photovoltaic cleaning products from Emil Otto.

EO-S-009 FD is a halide-free, no-clean flux for soldering solar modules, tabber and stringer materials, and for joining solar cells. It leaves no sticky residue, has a solids content of 1.8 %, and is non-corrosive.

Rust-preventive oil forms a protective barrier against moisture on metal surfaces, thereby reducing the risk of rust and corrosion. This is particularly important for machinery, vehicles, tools, and attachments that are regularly exposed to rain, snow, or high humidity.

In addition to protecting against rust and moisture, VO anti-rust oil can lubricate moving parts and protect them from wear. This makes it particularly suitable for providing seasonal protection for machinery and components during extended periods of damp weather.

Soldering nitinol is technically challenging because an extremely stable layer of titanium oxide forms immediately upon contact with air. This layer prevents the solder from reliably wetting the surface. Conventional fluxes are usually unable to effectively remove this oxide layer or leave behind critical residues, which significantly limits process reliability.

VO Anti-Rust Oil is suitable for protecting machinery, vehicles, attachments, and tools used outdoors from corrosion. Typical applications include agriculture, highway maintenance, construction equipment, cable cars, and maritime applications.
